Integrating Bodywork and Intuition

'Patty, I just wanted to share the following experience with you and thank you for the inspiration your class gave me. Last week I did a health fair at Johnson & Johnson. As you may can imagine there was all kinds of distractions and many, many people to massage. I was located next to a LCSW who had stress dots. We started putting them on the clients, then they would get massage and destress. I had one woman who's dot was black even after 5 minutes of massage. I decided to mentally ask her body what it wanted and instantly it went from black, by passed brown to green! When I followed her body's advise it went from green to blue. It was a sure confirmation that just the asking is as important as the doing. Thanks!' T. Davis, Demorest, GA 'Learning the technique of listening and talking to the body - and getting a response. It's very interesting to see it working.' D. Tuminello, Alpharetta, GA 'It opened my mind to a new way of perceiving my clients.' J. Daniels, Memphis, TN 'I feel this will be very useful to me now that I can be in touch with myself and I can get connected with my clients.' A. Hester, Tishmongo, MS 'These techniques will help extend the working life of any massage therapist.' K. McElwain, Memphis, TN

The Introduction of Clinical Modified Movement

intuition: the immediate knowing of something without the conscious use of reasoning (Webster's New World Dictionary)

Ask any gathering of massage therapists if they have experienced intuition in the therapeutic setting and more than 90% immediately raise their hands. Whether students or 16 year veterans in the field, chances are, they have repeatedly experienced intuitive information while with a client. Exact statistics for other professions as to their percentage of intuitive experiences is unknown and actually irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, massage therapists, for whatever reason, work in an environment infused with intuition.

What does this mean exactly? It means that a piece of information is suddenly known, without a shadow of a doubt, something not known a moment ago and not mentioned verbally. The information presents itself at the gut level and refuses to budge from there. It is a knowing.

It's long been known that the body is inherently wise, knowing exactly what it needs. The "inner physician," Applied Kiniesiology or "muscle testing," and healing breath work are just some of the references and modalities based on the cellular wisdom that thrives in what we call "body." As current day body workers, are we tapping into this resource? Do we know how? Can we connect with this information at will? More important, can we contact it when we need it the most, when the body seems to be working against us? And, as long as we're asking, is there a way of having the intuitive information be specific to bodywork?

Clinical Modified Movement (CMM) answers with a resounding "yes" to all of these questions. It is a bridge that connects directly into the intuitive level of our bodies. Once the bridge is known, it is available at all times and our work goes to a new level as we enter into a partnership.

It is the yin and yang of bodywork. The therapist is the yang, the active principle bringing intention, anatomical studies, modalities and the ability to move the body in small and large segments. The yin in this partnership is the intuitive level of the client's body, the part that knows exactly what it needs to heal. With the bridge provided in Clinical Modified Movement, its information becomes known to the therapist. From here, the therapists need only pay attention and follow as the body unfolds under our hands.

Interestingly, the information received through this bridge modality is almost exclusively bodywork related. The main three specified characteristics are:

  • Modality; exactly which would serve this area best at this specific time, (always chosen from within the therapist's framework)
  • Depth; how much pressure or lightness of touch serves best at this specific time and
  • Rhythm: the pace the tissues will best respond to.

Meeting the body on the table in this manner, the experiential definition of massage therapy, especially clinical, evolves. For the client, the experience of the session is transformed because body resistance has been removed from the equation. Post sessions after - effects (soreness or headaches) rarely occur because of the work having been a synergistic response to the body itself. For the therapist, the experience also evolves. Each session becomes a flowing, harmonious partnership in which the body itself is contributing in equal amounts, if not more.

The truth is that this simple modality allows massage therapists to connect with the client's "body will" and the work unfolds from there.

Once again, "The sum of the whole is greater than its parts."
